FAQ

How trustworthy is Arty's feedback?

Take it with a grain of salt. Arty is a language-learning harness built over an LLM — see the next question — so the quality of what it tells you depends on the model you pointed it at. A small local model will get things wrong that a state-of-the-art one would not.

It is not meant to replace real conversation or a real teacher. It is a tool for studying and practising on your own, at the hours when neither of those is available.

How is the feedback generated?

Arty uses an LLM — the kind of AI everyone has been talking about — to produce corrections and feedback. Settings gives you two ways to provide one:

  • A model running locally on your own machine. Arty offers three sizes of Google's Gemma, downloaded the first time you use one. This is the cheapest option — it costs nothing but your hardware — though the feedback is less precise. A smaller model answers faster and gets more wrong; a bigger one is more accurate but slower. How well either runs depends on the computer.
  • A state-of-the-art model from one of the big providers — Google, Anthropic, OpenAI and others. For this you create your own API key: the app points you at the page where that provider issues one, and you paste it in and test the connection.

An API key can cost money. Several providers include a free allowance, which is often enough for the number of requests Arty makes.

Which languages can I learn?

German, and for now only German — that is the language Arty was built and tested against, and the grammar lessons are written for it. Explanations can be shown in whichever language you prefer.

Spanish is the one I would like to add next. That is an intention, not a promise: this is a hobby project, and it gets done when there are evenings for it.

Where is my data kept?

On your own machine. Books, saved words and session history live in a local database you can copy, back up or delete. There is no sign-up, no profile and no server of ours holding your progress — the privacy policy lists exactly what is kept and what is sent to your model provider.

How can I help?

A bug report with the file that would not open, or a star that makes the project easier to find, is worth more than money — see ways to help. If you would rather buy a coffee, there is a Ko-fi link there too. Nothing in the app waits behind it either way.
